Ston Wall Marathon


Only 50 km north-west from Dubrovnik, on the scenic Peninsula Peljesac there is located a small but extraordinarily picturesque medieval town of Ston. In the past, Ston was the second major town in the Dubrovnik Republic. In the 14th and 15th centuries the monumental walls were constructed. They were 5 km long and 5-10 m high and were important defence system of the west part of the Republic. Ston is also one of the biggest salt producers in Croatia with vast areas of salt pans.
This is where the Ston Wall Marathon is organised every year in September. This is an one off a kind sport event in Europe. Some athletes - enthusiast have begun this marathon which attracts more and more marathonists from around the world. The course runs partially on historical Ston walls which are considered to be one of the longest European defence walls. The start and the meta are placed in the center of Ston. The race course is very demanding because of ascents and descents as well as serpentine roads along the seacoast. This is a special, adventure marathon among wonderful nature and cultural heritage of Ston.
