Zagreb City Tour

Zagreb – capital of Croatia, is a city with approximately 800.000 inhabitants and a busy life. It developed in medieval times from the settlements: Kaptol and Gradec.

After our meeting, we will start our walking tour of Zagreb with the Main Square - J. Jelacic Square which is the centre of Zagreb. You will see the statue of the viceroy Josip Jelačić after whom the square was named and hear the legend of how Zagreb received its name. Our way will take us to the Cathedral which is just 2 minutes away from the Main Square. The Cathedral was built at the end of the 19th century and is surrounded by medieval walls and the Archbishop's Palace. We will visit the Cathedral and find out more about Croatia's and Zagreb's history. Just across the Cathedral there is the "Belly of the city Zagreb" - Zagreb's largest market place - Dolac. From Dolac we walk to Opatovina through the remaining medieval walls and come to the Tkalčićeva street. Tkalčićeva street used to be the border between two settlements that today build the capital of Croatia: Kaptol and Upper town, which is also known as Gradec and Grič. This street today is a line of coffee bars and restaurants, shops and a favorite promenade of Zagreb inhabitants and visitors. The Bloody bridge street is very small but significant for the clashes between the inhabitants of the two settlements who always had a reason to fight. Today there is no bridge, but the name from the old times still remains. From this point we proceed along the Long street toward the Stone gate, the only remaining gate of the Upper town. The rhythm of the Upper town is much slower that the busy centre and Kaptol and it will bring you in the medieval period when the Upper town was a place of craftsmen. In the Upper town the highlight is the St. Mark's church known for the colored roof with two coat-of-arms: the one on the left side showing the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia and the one on the right Zagreb. The St. Mark's square is the place where the Croatian Parliament is situated, this is the centre of political life of Croatia. From there we will continue walking to the St. Catherine's church and the viewpoint from where you can see Cathedral and market place. The Strossmayer promenade will take us to the Lotrščak tower and the Funicular that runs since 1890. This is the point where we will slowly leave the Upper town and come to the Lower town on the Ilica street. Passing by the shops on the Ilica street we will reach the Croatian National Theatre, built in 1895. Few minutes away is the Zrinjevac Park, popular relaxation zone of all Zagreb visitors. Our city tour ends here.
