Besides the natural phenomena of two small lakes in the center of the island linked by sea water, numerous historical monuments and landmarks can be visited - the oldest from the 5th century. These include the Rector's Palace (15th century) and the Benedictine Monastery (12th century) St. Mary's islet located in the center of the "Great Lake". Mljet is well known for its multi coves - the most famous The Ulysses Cave "Jama" - which legend tells gave shelter to Ulysses.
